The rail industry is the fourth largest segment in Europe travel but fragmentation and lack of standards are holding it back, particularly when it comes to cross-border travel.
Such issues come as more travelers continue to use rail and the networks across Europe shift to high speed operations, putting pressure on traditional short-haul, city-to-city air routes.

A panel of experts from rail operators and technology companies joined a session (At the Speed of Rail) during Phocuswright Europe to discuss the lack of standards, the challenges for rail providers and how multimodal could play an important role in getting more people on trains.
Some current developments such as SNCF’s plan to launch a travel assistant in June enabling rail and other modes of transport to be booked and, Expedia’s strategy to push rail, were also touched on.
