Trip.com is the first major online travel agency to step into the world of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) with the launch of Trekki.
The Singapore-based brand plans to sell 10,000 dolphin-themed NFTs later this year via a Trekki website with each token possessing a different character and travel background.
Trekki will enable holders to access experiences and benefits from Trip.com. And there is a gamification element - the more those holding the NFT travel, the more benefits are unlocked.

The initiative is also seeking to partner with existing Web3 players and tourism partners to expand the benefits available to token holders.
The travel industry has seen a number of startups spring up around NFTs including Pinktada and PhocusWire Hot 25 Travel Startup company TravelX as well as claims of NFT firsts around hotel stays and flight tickets.
The industry has also explored various use cases for NFTs with Lufthansa Innovation Hub highlighting loyalty, travel communities and NFT passports as the main areas being explored by travel companies, in a study just over a year ago.
