Sensible Weather, a startup that provides a “Weather Guarantee”
that reimburses consumers if their travel
or outdoor experiences are disrupted by weather, has received a strategic
investment from Amex Ventures. The company’s prior investors Wonder Ventures and
Infinity Ventures and new investor Industry Ventures all participated in the
round.
A spokesperson for Sensible Weather said the company is
not disclosing the amount of this investment but, since its founding in 2019, the
startup has raised $22 million.
Sensible Weather describes itself as a “climate finance
platform that combines the
latest weather, financial and risk management technologies” to create products
and services that provide weather predictability and confidence to consumers.

The company said it has sold more than 50,000 Weather Guarantees since launching the
product in 2021. Earlier this month, TUI
Group announced it was adding the Weather Guarantee to tours offered
through its First Choice brand.
Sensible Weather said thousands of partners offer the guarantee
on their websites and lists clients including hotels, water parks and
campgrounds.
“The success of the Weather Guarantee, with over 50,000
sold and attach rates up to 5x higher than travel insurance offerings, is a
reflection of the growing need for travel, outdoor and event consumers to
better protect themselves against disruptive weather,” said Nick Cavanaugh, Sensible
Weather founder and CEO.
“The investment from Amex builds on our momentum and enables us to help more
consumers enjoy their experiences, no matter the weather.”
Sensible automatically reimburses consumers who
purchase a Weather Guarantee if a pre-set threshold of forecasted weather is
met. Before disruptive weather occurs, Sensible proactively notifies consumers
that a reimbursement is available, and the consumer can still take part in
their planned travel or activity.
“We are proud to support Sensible Weather in its
efforts to provide novel solutions for consumers who love travel and outdoor
experiences but face increasing challenges from unpredictable weather,” said Matt
Sueoka, global head of Amex Ventures.
“Sensible Weather offers consumers peace of mind when
booking weather-dependent experiences, thanks to their vision, innovative
strategy and compelling product.”
Sensible Weather's last funding was a Series A round in May 2022.
