In the 2023 edition of “The Year in Review and the Year Ahead” webinar,

- Sustainability: The gap between
“belief,” where most travelers express the importance of sustainability, and “behavior,” where only few travelers act on this
belief, is clearly defined in new Phocuswright research. For instance, while 48% of travelers in the United States say
they are more likely to choose an accommodation based on its “environmental friendliness” vs.
“price,” less than 10% actually follow through on this belief. The webinar explores ways to bridge this gap,
addressing why and how travelers make sustainable decisions.
- Social
media: While important for
all travelers, social media has a particularly strong influence on younger visitors. This gap has widened in recent years. According to
Phocuswright’s latest research, 48% of 18-34-year-olds cite social media as influential in deciding
where to visit, compared with only 26% of all travelers and 8% of those age 55 and above. Specifically,
short, vertical videos have grown in importance, influencing not only destination decisions but
also in-market choices for where to eat, drink and find experiences in nature.
- Generative
AI in action: Artificial intelligence remains
the most significant set of technologies, yet most tourism businesses are still struggling to implement practical AI solutions.
