The concept of identity is a fundamental part of security for
all sectors of travel. In recent years, emerging technologies such as
blockchain have gained prominence as a mechanism to create identity solutions built
on a foundation of data privacy and safety.
Decentralized identity, as it is known, gives control of
personally identifiable information to the individual and removes the need for
third parties to manage or hold that data.
And in the last year the COVID crisis – and the need to
verify test results and vaccination status - has accelerated interest in these
types of solutions as a way to preserve travelers’ privacy, ensure trust, add
efficiency to processing and remove the need for contact.

Two organizations leading the development of decentralized
identity solutions are Indicio and SITA.
The two companies recently partnered
with the government of Aruba to test a digital health app that uses
blockchain to verify and exchange personal health data.
Speaking during PhocusWire Pulse: Decoding Travel Security, Indicio
CEO Heather Dahl and SITA Lab director Gus Pina explain what is meant by
decentralized identity, how it can be used in travel and how blockchain both is
and is not used in these products.
