Airline industry losses amounted to $118 billion in 2020 and while they should not be so significant in 2021, carriers are desperate to ramp up passenger numbers again.
Carriers have been lobbying governments for months on measures taken and how they will ensure the safe return to the skies with COVID-19 still casting a shadow in the background.
Technology has a crucial role to play and a number of health passport initiatives are underway, including IATA travel pass, enabling passengers to provide a digital verification of their health status.
We spoke to Alan Murray Hayden, head of airport, passenger and security products for IATA, on current challenges, at the PhocusWire Pulse: Safer & Seamless event last month.
The discussion centers on the various health passports developments, getting governments on board, the need for standards and concerns over passenger privacy.
He also talked about the prospect for a digital identification being a game-changer in aviation going forward in terms of a seamless passenger journey.
